An explosion at Kabul’s airport on Thursday “resulted in a number of US and civilian casualties,” according to a Pentagon official.
On Thursday, US Defense Department Press Secretary John Kirby tweeted that the explosion occurred “near the Abbey Gate of the Kabul airport.”
He went on to say that there was “at least one other explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, a little distance from the Abbey Gate.”
According to Reuters, US officials believe the incident at the Abbey Gate was caused by a suicide bomber.
The United States and the United Kingdom had advised visitors to avoid the airport, citing vague security dangers.
